Lose 50 Pounds FAQ:
I was wondering fun exercises I can do to lose weight by my 21st birthday. I want to look like I did when I was in high school. Also do you know of any diets that actually work and easy to stay on?

You can do it…you just have to work hard at it. I suggest keeping a workout calendar and updating it daily….that is what keeps me going.
You need to do Cardio or Aerobics 5-6 days a week for 45-60 minutes. You can do this by using a Treadmill, Eliptical, Stationary bike, ect. Or you can pick up some tapes and use them. I recommend Leslie Sansome “Walk off the Pounds…the 3 mile walk. I had a friend who use this video everyday and lost 60 lbs in about 6 months!
go walking every day
cut one thing out of your diet that you know gets in the way
self-motivation is key
Think in terms of a sensible diet. Don’t set specific “number” goals because you’ll only be setting yourself up for disappointment if you don’t meet them. If you begin a healthy routine today, you will most certainly be lighter than you are now by August 23. There are no guarantees that you’ll be 50 pounds lighter, but you’ll definitely look at feel better.
Since you asked about specific diets, let me recommend the Weight Watchers flex plan. As the name implies, it gives you lots of flexibility about what you can eat. They even have an online program (which is what I use) if you don’t have time for meetings.
This is the only “diet” that has ever worked for me and I think the reason is that it’s really a lifestyle change. They recommend:
1) at least 48 oz of water each day
2) 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
3) 2-3 servings of dairy
beyond that you have lots of flexibility, but it’s best to choose lean proteins and high fiber/whole grain foods when possible.
However, if you absolutely MUST have that piece of chocolate cake, you’re well within your rights to do so, so long as you count it. Good luck!
OMG I am doing the exact same thing! I bought this pair of jeans that I want to be able to just slip into on my 21st birthday (May 5th). I only wanted to lose about 5-10 pounds though. Here is what I’m doing (I started last week, and I can already feel a difference in my body!):
45 minutes of Pilates 5 times a week
30 minutes of jogging at 5mph 4 times a week
1200 calorie diet (no fried, sugary, high fat or high carb foods)
I’m really loving it! The exercise is fun and makes me feel great! I think I have lost about 2 pounds so far. Try it if you want!
I’ve been losing weight since February, and I have lost around 16lbs so far. I have been doing home exercise videos (get them second hand from ebay, or charity shops). I found some really good ones that I didn’t get bored with. I also bought some cheap hand weights to help tone up, which is working too.
Diet-wise, I have been limiting myself to around 1000 - 1200 calories a day. I have cut out junk food completely, and cut my portion sizes by over half. Remember it’s not just what you eat, it’s how much of it you eat too. It’s so easy to overeat and give yourself far more than you need. Listen to your body. I now know how to tell when I am actually full!
Do the exercises every day (dance-based videos are really good fun - at the moment I am doing a Bollywood Bangra one, which is great!). You only need to do 30 - 45 minutes a day to make a difference.
I am 32, and the weight has taken much longer to shift than it would have at 21. I used to lose weight really easily at your age, so it shouldn’t be too hard, as long as you stick to it. Remember portion sizes, and cut out junk. Eat fruit and veg, but remember to count it all.
Good luck!
